Participating in pottery workshops is one of the unique and popular art experiences in Ho Chi Minh City. This is a long-standing and typical traditional craft of Vietnam. This interesting experience not only allows you to be creative and create unique products with your own style, but also helps you gain a deeper understanding of traditional pottery. In addition, pottery making is also a great way to relieve stress after stressful working hours.

Pottery Making Process at Workshop
Step 1: Soil Purification - Clay Making Process
The first step in making pottery is to choose the best quality clay and kaolin. Then, the soil is processed through many steps to achieve the best quality for the pottery making process. Clay is often very hard after mining, so it needs to be added with water and kneaded thoroughly. After kneading many times to achieve smoothness and plasticity, then start making pottery.
Step 2: Ceramic Stroke - Ceramic Shaping
In fact, there are 3 main methods for shaping pottery, which are:
Shaping on a turntable
Shaping with a mold
Hand molding
The method of shaping pottery on a turntable is most commonly used in the Workshop
- Ceramic Shaping on a Turntable
After the clay has been thoroughly processed and has a certain plasticity, it will be shaped into large and uniform lumps before being placed on the turntable. The pottery wheel is automatically run, the clay is shaped into different shapes by the potter's skillful hands. This method is often used to create large-sized products such as jars, pots, vases, etc.
- Molding
This method is often applied to produce ceramic products of moderate mass such as bowls, cups, plates, etc. By pouring clay into the mold, the product can be shaped uniformly and quickly.
- Hand-Shaping Ceramics
This technique is often applied to create small details or highly artistic ceramic products such as chickens, ceramic peaks, cans, jars, baked bags or animal statues, etc.

Step 3: Decorate the pattern
Draw Directly on the Ceramic
In this step, you will use a brush to draw directly on the natural background the motifs and patterns. To do this step perfectly, you must be meticulous, the pattern on the ceramic is drawn in detail and matches the shape of the product. This has helped your ceramic product become more delicate and beautiful. Some ceramic products after being glazed and decorated with patterns, this step is called painting on glaze. Decorating the pattern before glazing is called painting under glaze.
Cut, Trim & Direct Marking
Ceramic products after being polished will be dried in the sun until the clay hardens, then repaired, trimmed and smoothed as desired. Marking is the main method to decorate patterns on ceramics.
